WP6 - Justice in Revolution(s). The French experience (1795-1814) and the Dutch experience (1815-1830)

Partners Involved

Université Lille 3 & Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam

General Objectives

By integrating the Université Lille 3 and the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam as European partners in the IAP program, the Belgian partners aimed to gain substantial new insights into two major preliminary phases of the formation of an independent judicial system in Belgium: the French revolutionary and imperial experience (1795-1815) and the experience of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands (1815-1830).

Workprogramme

The objectives put forward for the collaboration with the European partners, within a specific WP6 on ‘Justice in Revolution(s)’, were to organise international workshops, as well as a joint international conference with the CEGESOMA on war, revolution and justice (WP5). By opting to engage in such international exchanges, the Belgian, French and Dutch partners aimed

  • to transcend traditional national perspectives by bringing together various national judicial, police and legal models, examining integration processes and comparing European conflict experiences of justice and political hegemony.
  • to understand the origins of Belgian justice, police and law, the identification of common experiences, and the singling out of national differences in the process of construction, while at the same time, its focus on mutual exchanges has demonstrated that the study of the judicial history of Belgium also illuminates the experiences of France and the Netherlands.
